From the Heart: An Excerpt of Yutaka Kinoshita’s Letter to Mr. Prem Rawat

In October last year, I had the honor of meeting with you in Kyoto to discuss your third picture book, The King and Dessert. During that meeting, you graciously granted us permission to publish this book.
Ms. Akiko Kunisu, the picture book artist, and I are committed to completing the book by October 1st of this year. It will be a bilingual edition, presenting both the original Japanese text and its English translation—a new and exciting approach for us.
We believe that children will absolutely love this story, which portrays a king bewildered by the animals around him. While humorous on the surface, the story delves deeply into the nature of human desire. It also serves as a powerful allegory—a gentle but clear warning to adults who wage wars to expand their territories or pursue only their own corporate interests, driven by unchecked greed.

Children in children’s care homes live in group settings because they cannot live with their biological parents due to reasons such as having no relatives or experiencing parental abuse. In recent years, abuse has become the leading cause for children entering these facilities.

In prisons, both juveniles and adults who aim for rehabilitation and reintegration into society live within high walls and barbed wire fences.

At the Prem Rawat Japan Office (Bunya), with the understanding and cooperation of people around the world, we have already gifted Prem Rawat’s books—Pot with the Hole, the picture book Pot with the Hole, the picture book I want to be, Breath, and the Japanese edition of Hear Yourself—to facilities such as children’s homes, hospitals, and prisons, where they have been very well received.

The total number of these donated books, both in Japan and worldwide, now stands at 15,010 copies.
